KINGSHILL WATER TOWER (09HT01)
Location: Hertfordshire, on the south side of Berkhampstead, just off Shooters Way. Grid Ref, 983069. This tower is still functioning in its original role and is visible from the nearby A41 on the northern side. The stunning white water tower was built in 1935 by JR Hadfield. It was purposely constructed to look like a fortified chateau with red-tiled conical roof surmounted by a weather-vane.


POTTEN END WATER TOWER (09HT03)
Location: West of Hemel Hempstead; this tower lies on your right just past the village green as you head east to west through the village. It is in good order but well shielded by trees. Grid Ref. 015088.


FELDEN WATER TOWER (09HT03)
Location: Hertfordshire, at Feldon on the south-west side of Hemel Hempstead. Grid Ref. 041 049. This impressive octagonal tower dates from 1910 and is now converted to residential use. It lies opposite Tower Farm at the top of the hill in Featherbed Lane, HP3 0BT. It is 80 feet (24 m) tall and contained 50,600 imperial gallons of water. Plans were laid to redevelop the building in 2007.


GREAT GADDESDEN WATER TOWER (09HT04)
North of Hemel Hempstead, this tower lies in the country along Gaddesden Row on the south-west side. Grid Ref 408132.



MARKYATE WATER TOWER (09HT05)
This disused tower lies just north of Markyate, Hertfordshire. AL3 8QE. Head north-west through historic Markyate and take the right turn, B4540, Luton Road heading north-east. Luton is about 3 miles away. The tower lies about half a mile along Luton Road on the right. Grid Ref. 069175. In 2024 it was for sale for half a million UK pounds and subsequently displays a notice that it has been acquired by Glenenden Plant Sales. The possibility of conversion to residential has been approved. This tower is similar to that at Gaddesden.


HIGH STREET GREEN WATER TOWER (09HT06)
Location: On your left in Farmhouse Lane, just past the roundabout, as you enter the High Street Green road into Hemel Hempstead. Hertfordshire. This concrete structure is hexagonal and still operates as a water tower.

REDDING WOOD WATER TOWER (09HT08)
This tower is situated adjacent to the M1 motorway just south of Junction 9 near Flamstead. It is adjacent to the Herts County Showground but is best viewed by heading south-east on the A5 trunk road from Flamstead - cross the motorway at jn. 9 and the showground is immediately on the right. Take Redding Lane right, immediately after the showground and this will take you past the tower. Grid Ref. 096140.



TEA GREEN WATER TOWER (09HT09)
This tower is located east of Luton in a small village near to the White Horse public house.


OFFLEY WATER TOWER (09HT10)
Meadow Way, Offley, North-east of Luton. Grid Ref. 140273.

PETERS GREEN WATER TOWER (09HT12)
This tower is located east of Luton in a small village. It is a Braithwaite structure dating from the 1930s.




PIRTON WATER TOWER (09HT13)
This iron tank with steel girder tower lies on Priors Hill on the western side of the village of Pirton. Grid Ref. 143317. It is allegedly under threat due to a planning application to demolish and replace with a residential property. Although refused, it was subject to appeal, also refused on grounds that it would not enhance or conserve the AONB. It has also gone on the market for £150,000.00.


WHITWELL WATER TOWER (09HT14)
Horn Hill, on the western side of Whitwell village. SG4 8AR. Grid Ref. 177208. This tower is located several miles east of Luton in a small village.


WINDMILL HILL WATER TOWER (09HT15)
Location: EF3 NW7. on the eastern side of Hitchin; It was built by Hitchen Urban District Council and opened for use in 1909. It is a circular brick building without its tank(s).Grid Ref. 015088.




AYOT ST LAWRENCE WATER TOWER (09HT16)
Bibbs Hall Lane, Ayot St Lawrence. The tower lies in woodland on the north western side of the village and can be viewed by taking the footpath from Ayot View entrance in Bibbs Hall Lane. The tower is about 300 yards on the left. The village lies about 5 miles south-west of Stevenage. Grid Ref 191 171.



WYMONDLEY WATER TOWER (09HT17)
Location: Hertfordshire, on the south-eastern side of Hitchin and near the juction of the A1 (M) road at Little Wymondley. It can be viewed from Tower Close. Park in the south side of Wymondley village and walk up the short hill to the recreation ground and tennis courts.



CODICOT WATER TOWER (09HT18)
Codicot lies about 4 miles south-west of Stevenage and this 50 foot high tower is sited on the northern side of the village in Tower Road, a turning east off the B656 road to Hitchin. The track alongside house number 31 leads to the tower. Grid Ref 217 189.





GREGGS WOOD WATER TOWER (09HT19)
Near Danesbury, end of the Avenue just north of Welwyn. This tower is no longer in use as a water facility and is under consideration for conversion to residential along with the brick building next to it. Grid Square Ref. 22 16.






POTTERS HEATH WATER TOWER (09HT20)
The tower lies up the Tower Barn track from Danesbury Lane which is a turning off Danesbury Park Road, at Potterheath. It is not accessible to the general public. Grid Ref. 2360417978. Pottersheath lies between Codicot and Oaklands, south of Stevenage.



RABLEY HEATH WATER TOWER (09HT21)
This tower lies in Rabley Heath Road, AL6 9UF, about a mile east of the village of Codicot. Codicot lies about 4 miles south of Stevenage. Grid Ref. 238191.

PIN GREEN WATER TOWER (09HT23)
Meredith Road, opposite Sutcliffe Close, Stevenage SG1 5AZ. Reputedly this is said to be the highest point in the locality. The tower is a striking structure and looks well in this location amongst extensive modern residential housing. Grid Square Ref 2425



BROOKMANS PARK WATER TOWER (09HT24)
Brookman's Park township lies about 2 miles north of Potters Bar. The tower is on the western side of the B158 road. This is about a mile north of the residential area. The tower is located on a key site for the local water supply which includes reservoirs and servicing facilities. Grid Ref 262 051.



WESTON WATER TOWER (09HT25)
Mill Lane. This tower lies about 5 miles north of Stevenage, about 3 miles south of Baldock. The site is near the center of the village, grid ref. 262304.



26 Burnham Green GONE



BULLS GREEN WATER TOWER (09HT27)
This tower lies about 5 miles south of Stevenage near Burnham Green. The site is on the eastern side of Bulls Green, grid ref. 277174.



ASTON WATER TOWER (09HT28)
South-east side of Stevenage, this tower lies just north of the village of Aston near Aston End; on the eastern side of the north/south country road past Barsleigh. In 2019 it was sold by auction for just under £200,000.00 and is thought likely to be converted to residential in due course. Grid Ref. 275237.



EPPING GREEN WATER TOWER (09HT29)
Cuffley lies about 3 miles south of Epping Green village. The tower in turn lies on the western side of Epping Green. A bridleway leads past the tower location. Grid ref. 293067.




2 BENINGTON WATER TOWERS (09HT30)
The first water tower plays an important role in marking the site of a playing field located in the "Old School Green" area of Benington. The Benington locality lies three miles east of Stevenage. Click left for details.

The second tower is an ivy covered Victorian water tower converted to residential. Now it provides amazing accommodation for those holidaying in the area. Access is via a gated drive to Benington House off the main street at the north end of the village. Up the drive the old water tower is signed right. Click right for more details.

BENGEO WATER TOWER (09HT31)
Hertford. The general location of this tower lies on the northern side of Hertford. The locality has a history of successive water towers. The original tower was in Tower Street from 1880 - 1938; the site is now occupied by two bungalows. A larger tank took over in The Drive from 1930. In 1942 and 1948 it required leaks to be repaired. Then, in 1964, it was in turn replaced by the current tower in Temple Lane. This third tower has a capacity of 50,000 gallons. Grid Ref 3042402054 13770.


THERFIELD WATER TOWER (09HT32)
SG8 5BJ. This tower lies to the north of the county, about 3 miles south of Royston; on the west side of the village of Therfield. It is a Thames Water site. The local heath is a nature reserve and SSSI. Grid Square Ref. 33 37. To continue your voyage of discovery click left.




THROCKING WATER TOWER (09HT33)
This tower lies about 10 miles east of Stevenage near Buntingford which in turn lies a further 2 miles east. Grid ref. 334301.

TONWELL WATER TOWER (09HT34)
Temple Lane, Tonwell, a mile or so north of Ware. This, now residential, tower lies between the River Beane and the River Rib in the East Herefordshire District. Construction dates from 1964 and it was commissioned by the Lee Valley Water Company. The height is 30 meters and the capacity was 900 cubic meters. It was designed by Edmund Percy as a distinct landmark feature to provide water to the local village and estate and was constructed on site, using reinforced concrete. Subsequently the structure was converted to residential use. It is Grade II listed. (see web site by clicking the picture left) Grid Ref. 335174.


HERTFORD HEATH WATER TOWER (09HT35)
Tower House, Tower Close. SG13 7RL. Located about a mile south-east of Hertford, this stunning tower is about 100 metres from the College Arms public house at Hertford Heath, just west of the A10 Road. It is a residential holiday home.


HODDESDON WATER TOWER (09HT36)
Goose Green, Hoddesdon. This tower lies north-west of the main town on the western side of the A10 road at Goose Green. Grid ref. 354091. It is managed by Thames Water.




MUSLEY HILL WATER TOWER (09HT37)
Tower Road, Ware. SG12 7LL. This feature stands on the northern higher outskirts of Ware, the town being located in the Lea Valley. Water drawn from two wells, one in Musley Lane and the other at Musley Hill is pumped to the Water Tower. Modern housing built in the 1950s and 1960s dominates the area.



OLD HALL GREEN WATER TOWER (09HT38)
Beggarmans Lane off Stockalls Lane, west of Standon. This tower lies just west of Old Hall Green. Grid ref. 366225.




BRAUGHING FRIARS WATER TOWER (09HT39)
Located just west of the village of Albury, north-west of Bishops Stortford, situated nearby to Ferricks Wood forest and near Threecornered Spring. Grid Ref. 424 244. MEESDEN WATER TOWER (09HT40)
The tower is located in Meesden, a village about 7 miles east of Buntingford. The main road through the village runs east-west and the water tower is located at the eastern end. A bridleway heads north off the main road and the tower is concealed by trees at the junction of the road and bridleway. Grid ref. 432324.




SILVER LAYS WATER TOWER (09HT41)
Location: Radley Lane, Bishops Stortford, Hertfordshire, between the A120 and A1250 near the junction of the two roads. Located at the end of Boswell Street in Stortford Fields, an area of substantial residential development of recent; over 2000 new homes generated. Grid Ref. TL4722.




SPRINGWOOD WATER TOWER (09HT42)
Location: north-east Bishops Stortford near Birchanger, East Hertfordshire District, England. It is situated adjacent to the Birchanger Woods, as well as near the community centre used by the 1st Bishop’s Stortford and Hockerill Scout Group. The water tower was designed by Tony Boyton to resemble a champagne glass and provides water pressure for the town. It is a functioning part of the town's infrastructure, however there have been isolated incidents of past flooding and mains bursts when the tower was undergoing renovation. The tower is at the SW corner of a reservoir. Grid Ref. 503224.



SHENLEY WATER TOWER (09HT43)
Location: Shenley, near Borehamwood, Herts. WD7 9LR. The 130 foot high Shenley Tower, which was built in 1930s, lies on a gated private development. The 1930s water tower was originally part of the former Shenley hospital site until it was demolished in 1998. Shenley Water Tower was converted into luxury apartments in 2006.



BRIGGENS WATER TOWER (09HT44)
Hunsdon Mead near Stanstead Abbots. This Victorian tower lies in an historic landscape of a former stately home, now Briggens House Hotel. Known as a stilt house, it is 82 feet tall and converted for hire including the roof terrace and sunken garden. To continue your voyage of discovery right.




NAPSBURY WATER TOWER (09HT45)
This Hertfordshire water tower is in Shenley Lane, London Colney, Herts AL2 1AA. Once this was part of Napsbury mental hospital until demolished, after which the surviving tower was converted to residential.



STRATTON'S TOWER (09HT46)
Buck's Alley, Little Berkhamsted, Hertford. Located on Robin's Nest Hill, it was built c.1789 by John Stratton using vintage materials from the earlier "Brew House". This tower is now Grade II listed and residential. Grid Ref. 295081. It forms an interesting red brick, slender landscape feature that can be seen from considerable distance. It is included here as it is often interpreted as a water tower.


DANESBURY WATER TOWER (09HT47)
Danesbury Park Road, AL6 9SF. The tower and adjacent barn are derelict but were once part of the Danesbury Park Estate including Danesbury House. Planning permission was granted back in 2010. The current owner subsequently laid building foundations in the area between the tower and the barns, thus exercising the planning consent. This aspect of the conversion is the only part that has taken place to date and the internal space, once completed, will amount to approximately 2,900 sq.ft. This has planning consent for conversion to notable residential accommodation attractively located, as it is, in countryside on the north side of Welwyn Garden City.


WALKERN TOWER (09HT48)
14 The Maltings, SG2 7NB, at the southern end of Walkern High Street. Located two miles east of Stevenage. A former grain store and possible water tower within a brewery dating from 1866. Brewing ceased in 1924 and cyder production continued until 1955. The buildings were subsequently converted to residential. Grid ref. 287257.



RICKMANSWORTH RAILWAY STATION WATER TOWER (09HT49)
Opened 1 Sept 1887, this station is served by the Metropolitan tube line and National Rail. The tower is located on the end of the platform and can be seen from the Station Approach. Grid Ref. 057946. The water tower is no longer in use for servicing steam locomotives.


ESSENDON WATER TOWER (09HT50)
The village lies on the B158 north-south road south of Welwyn. The tower is located at the "lower numbered houses end" of the main street. It is next to No. 2. A red brick circular building with an adjoining front door extension, the tower is now residential. Grid Square Ref.2708.
